Apprenticing with Missio Dei
May 27, 2008 – 5:23 pm | by van sThis summer, we’re hoping to rent a second community house. We’re actively seeking two apprentices, either short or long term. One of those apprenticeships could be filled by a married couple. We’re setting a tentative application deadline for August 1st (contact us for an application). Here’s the basic info:
Short Term Apprentices:
- Short term apprentices are for folks who live in community for up to three months. During their stay, they will be expected to participate in our community rhythms, abide by our rule of life, and follow house rules.
- Suggested donation for a short term apprentice is $250 per month, but we’re flexible.
- In the beginning of their stay, short term apprentices are paired with a community member that journeys with them into the community and helps to orient them to our way of life.
- Short term apprentices will meet with a community member (usually Mark) every week (or every other week) to check in, discuss any readings, and any other personal “assignments” designed to help the apprentice maximize their experience at Missio Dei.
Full Apprentices:
- A full apprentice commits a minimum of 9 months but isn’t interested in being a long-term community member of Missio Dei (though we’re open to that possibility).
- They will agree to the same commitments at short-term apprentices.
- They will be expected to work part time jobs, or be a part-time student, but not full-time.
- They will be expected to volunteer in the neighborhood.
- After the apprentice gets acclimated to our way of life, we’ll encourage them to take on more community responsibilities.
Hopefully, in the future, we’re going to be working with some like-minded communities from around the country (maybe even around the world) to develop a multi-site apprenticeship that would be college or seminary accredited. But for now, all we can offer is some hands on learning and friendship.
